As a result of the agreement negotiated between the Town of Athens and Athens Generating, a trust fund was set up in 2001 to receive community benefits funding and manage the strategy of safeguarding donated assets’ growth into perpetuity, while providing maximum yearly benefits for the people of Athens. As of December, 2011, the grand total of all contributions into the fund, including additional outside sources such as the Peckham Family Foundation, stood at $3,757,824.
For 2011, the Trustees of the Athens Community Foundation announced the distribution of 30 grants totaling $138,040.00 to 27 separate Athens based qualifying civic, sports, fraternal, educational, cultural and governmental groups. Including this cycle, the ninth annual round of grants by the Foundation, the number of grants over the life of the foundation now totals 239, along with a total dollar figure disbursement of over $1,167,717.00 Major funding from the Athens Community Foundation has made this website possible without taxpayer expense.
2012 Grant Applications for the Athens Community Foundation are currently available in the Town Clerk's Office during regular business hours. All completed applications and supporting documents are due back at the same office on or before Friday, October 26, 2012. Grants totaling $163,117.00 will be announced and awarded in December 2012.
