Athens Community Foundation
As a result of the agreement negotiated between the Town of Athens and Athens Generating, a trust fund was set up in 2001 to receive community benefits funding and manage the strategy of safeguarding donated assets’ growth into perpetuity, while providing maximum yearly benefits for the people of Athens. As of December, 2009, the grand total of all contributions into the fund, including additional outside sources such as the Peckham Family Foundation, stood at $3,750,824.

For 2009, the Trustees of the Athens Community Foundation announced the distribution of 28 grants totaling $152,648 to 22 separate Athens based qualifying civic, sports, fraternal, educational, cultural and governmental groups. Including this cycle, the seventh annual round of grants by the Foundation, the number of grants over the life of the foundation now totals 185, along with a total dollar figure disbursement of $900,000. Major funding from the Athens Community Foundation has made this website possible without taxpayer expense.

The timing for applications for funding for each year is announced by the Foundation’s Trustees, with grants awarded in early December.
